Professor Alpins has been practising cataract surgery and refractive surgery since founding NewVision Clinics in the 1990’s. He nationally and internationally recognised as a leading cataract and refractive surgeon and a leading world authority on myopia and astigmatism treatment with the excimer laser.
He has invented new methods for treating and analysing astigmatism which includes Vector Planning™, and has developed the ASSORT surgical planning outcomes analysis software program that is used by ophthalmologists in Australia and overseas. He speaks widely on these topics at national and international meetings and has been a keynote speaker and chair on many occasions. In September 2017 his book on these subjects “Practical Astigmatism: Planning and Analysis’ was published by SLACK inc NJ, USA.
In 2010, he was the invited Council Lecturer at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) annual scientific meeting in Adelaide, which was established to honour Fellows engaged in original work. In 2017, Dr Noel Alpins presented the Sir Norman Gregg Lecture at the 49th Annual RANZCO Scientific Congress in Perth- an opportunity only leading eye specialist receive by invitation.
Professor Alpins is on the editorial board of many prestigious publications, including the American and European Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ocular Surgery News, Eurotimes and others. He regularly contributes articles to scientific journals and ophthalmic information magazines on cataract and laser and astigmatism surgery.
He has received several awards during his career, including the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Lans Distinguished Award in Chicago in 2012. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made innovative contributions to the field of refractive surgery, especially in the correction of astigmatism. He received the 2013 American Academy Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award and in 2014 the ISRS Lifetime Achievement award for his internationally recognised contributions to the advancement of refractive surgery over his career. In May 2015 the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery awarded Dr Alpins the Certificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing in recognition of his contributions made to the quality of the journal. In 2019 Prof Alpins will be the recipient of the José I. Barraquer Lecture and Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and ISRS
In 2017, Professor Alpins was awarded with his Member of General Division of Order of Australia AM Honour for his significant service to ophthalmology, particularly to the development of innovative refractive surgery techniques, and to professional associations.
